About
An Ann Arbor MI native and Newburgh NY resident, Orin works in visual, audio and computer arts. Having pursued English and history majors at the University of Michigan, he is mostly self-trained in painting, photography, videography, computer programming and music. In his teens Orin began painting seriously and playing bass guitar in bands. In the 1980s he began creating algorithmic computer music/graphic videos, attempting to unite his visual and musical interests in one medium. He made computer art videos for events and for public access television and went on to bring photographic and audio engineering skills to his video art. For over 10 years he played bass in the eclectic New York rock band Fist of Kindness (fistofkindness.com). He works professionally in web design, graphic design, and videography. Orin exhibits computer art (lightdreams.tv), video art, photography, and painting (orinbuck.com).

Statement
While painting, drawing and music are basic modes of expression that I will always practice, I believe that newer media like photography, video and audio recording, and computer arts are basic tools of expression that artists should be familiar with. Having explored a variety of modes in these new media, I find that they bring out different aspects of my artistic involvement with the world.
In painting and drawing I explore the possibilities of abstract art as they were revealed in the 20th century. Abstract art came partly from an attempt to find a visual equivalent to music, and much my 2D work can be seen as little songs of line and color.
I express my love of landscape and the textures of nature in photography and some of the video. “Clouds Inside” and “Two Minutes, 2012, San Pedro Riparian Conservation Area” can be viewed as landscape photography that has added dimensions: time and sound.
In addition to straight video, some of my video art (such as “Sitting Dance”) utilizes overlays, time distortion and other effects to make objects for the senses that are meant to be seen more than once, just as you would experience a painting. The computer artworks are algorithmic compositions that endlessly generate new images. I hope to someday see them in one of the new emerging formats for video art: framed monitors hanging on the wall like paintings.
