There are many connecting points between composition in visual art and composition in music. Concepts of emphasis, balance, rhythm, movement, symmetry, unity and pattern are found in both. A melody is like a line; an instrument is a texture; orchestration gives color, form and space to a composition. I also work with music, and more than ever I am feeling a connection between my abstract painting and songs. Shapes and colors are like chords and notes, backgrounds are like the air created by all the elements in a recording behind the lines and structures of the melodies. Many (not all) of my abstracts can be seen as little songs, and we selected a few of those for this show.
